Short answer: installing adds the eSIM to your phone. Activating means the data plan starts on first use.
Install vs activate
| Term | Meaning | When to do it |
|---|---|---|
| Install | Add the 4S eSIM profile to your phone using One-Click Install, QR code, or activation details. | Within 1 month before departure, while you have stable Wi-Fi. |
| Activate | Start the data plan by first use, when the eSIM connects to a supported network and uses mobile data. | At your destination, when you are ready to use the plan. |
Why this matters
- You can install the eSIM before travel so it is ready on your phone.
- For best reliability, do not install too early. Install within 1 month before departure to reduce the chance of a PDP Authentication Failure or similar network authentication issue.
- Do not delete the eSIM after installation. Most eSIM profiles can only be installed once.
- The data plan starts on first use, not simply because the eSIM profile exists on your phone.
Recommended setup
- Install your 4S eSIM within 1 month before departure.
- When your phone asks for a label, use something clear, such as 4S eSIM, your destination country or region, or Travel.
- At your destination, select that eSIM label as mobile data.
- Turn on data roaming for that same eSIM line.
- Turn Wi-Fi off briefly and test mobile data.
